Since Gutenberg, publishing has meant one book printed for many readers. Here it is many books, each printed once, for the one reader it was calculated for. The catalogue is not a selection. It is a population.

Every volume carries a shelfmark, a statement of limitation and a colophon naming the night it was composed. The register of what has been printed is public. It holds no names, no birth dates and no contents · a bibliography is a list of works, not a list of readers.
